I'm afraid, if the government paid everyone's tuition, that this would lead to spiraling inflation of college costs (already a problem today) and would also involve plunking down Harvard-style tuition payments for the children of the very wealthy. I do favor providing more government support for middle class and poor postsecondary students. I also believe we should reevaluate our standards for determining financial need so that we do not squeeze middle-class families. Perhaps government student aid could resemble government aid for health care where we pay "reasonable and customary" amounts and require the institution to accept that as payment in full in an attempt to control costs; but this probably has unintended consequences I'm not smart enough to anticipate.
