We live in a country that was seduced into car dependency by oil/automotive companies and we now have our most promising opportunity since the transcontinental railroad to reinvest in public transportation, with a good amount of public support behind it at the present. Why would we divert funds into the next frontier of car dependency (after all, electric cars are still wildly inefficient and their "sustainability" is debatable) when we could be connecting entire regions of our country with high-speed rail or mobilizing our working class with expanded rapid/neighborhood transit options in our great cities?
